Robert Kahn, American electrical engineer, one of the principal architects, with Vinton Cerf, of the Internet. In 2004 they won the A.M. Turing Award for their ‘pioneering work in internetworking, including the design and implementation of the Internet’s basic communications protocols, TCP/IP.’
Bob Kahn won’t take the bait when asked if he is the father of the Internet. He acts almost as if it’s a trick question, and it isn’t the first time he’s heard it. “If I said I did invent it, I’d likely end up in a cartoon somewhere,” says Kahn.
Kahn doesn't remember if he was in the van or not. At the time, it was just another experiment. But it pushed TCP/IP forward – and TCP/IP would soon give rise to the internet. The ARPAnet officially adopted the protocol in 1983, and by then, it was already used across research networks in Asia.
Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf were each inducted as an Honorary Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) in May 2006. The duo were also awarded with the Harold Pender Award, the highest honor awarded by the University of Pennsylvania School Engineering and Applied Sciences, in February 2010.
