On 25 August 2001, Nystrøm married fellow Aqua band member Søren Rasted, with the ceremony being held in Las Vegas.

Soon after, the band went their separate ways, stating to Billboard: "We have looked each other straight in the eye and reached the conclusion that, for the moment, the spark is missing." But there were rumours going around that the group's split was actually because of a love triangle between Lene, René and Søren.

The fourth member of Aqua, 52-year-old Claus Norreen, left the group in 2016 to pursue other opportunities. The Europop act burst onto the international scene in 1997 with the massive hit Barbie Girl, which reached number 1 in more than 10 countries and quickly became one of the most recognisable songs of the 90s.

It was written after Rasted saw an exhibit on kitsch culture in Denmark that featured Barbie dolls. The accompanying music video was directed by Danish directors Peder Pedersen and Peter Stenbæk.
