The Thai greeting 'Sawasdee' means 'hello'. It was put together by humans during the 1930s and is fairly polite, often used upon first meeting or in formal situations. However, it's used less often in informal situations and almost never in intimate ones.
In Thai, 'Sawas' means good or great. So, 'Sawas' is used as 'Good morning'. For 'good afternoon', the Thai equivalent is 'Sawasdee' or 'Wasdee'. For 'good evening', you have 'Sayan Sawas' (สายัณห์สวัสดิ์). 'Sayan' means dusk or evening, and 'Sawas' means good or great.
